KOBO - Raku Ceramic Buddha - Zen and Buddhist Art - Home Decor
This listing is for one Raku Ceramic Buddha Sculpture. I have named him Kobo after Kobo Daishi. I am sure there is no resemblance but after my recent trip to Japan and visiting Mount Koyasan, I have been introduced to Shingon Esoteric Buddhism and Kobo Daishi. Kobo Daishi is the person responsible for bringing the Tibetan, or Vajrayana line of Buddhism to Japan. On Koyasan there are at least 37 active temples practicing this form of Buddhism. As well there is a Pilgrimage on Shikoku, which follows Kobo Daishi's route. There are 88 Temples to visit in total.
Raku is an ancient Japanese Ceramic glazing technique in which the objects are glazed, fired and smoked. There is a great element of the unknown at work, and it is very difficult to control the outcomes. Therefore one must really try to have no expectation. During the firing process, after reaching 900 C they are placed carefully in barrels with paper and wood chips to be smoked. After some minutes the objects are plunged into cold water. This is what gives them the special iridescence and crackly effect.
