What is Raku?
The word Raku means to relish a sense of Freedom.
Raku is an ancient Japanese Ceramic glazing technique developed in the early 1500’s. It became the Ceremonial tea Ware of the Zen masters and the Tea Ceremony. There is a great element of the unknown at work, and it is very difficult to control the outcomes. During the firing process, the kiln reaches 900 C very quickly. Then red-hot, they are placed carefully in reduction barrels with paper and woodchips. After 5 to 10 minutes the objects are plunged into cold water.
